The government has announced the creation of two new sub-counties in Garissa County. Interior and National Administration CS Kithure Kindiki, who led a national tree-planting exercise in Garissa town made the announcement.

Interior and National Administration CS Kithure Kindiki, who led a national tree-planting exercise in Garissa town made the announcement. “Next week Sankuri Ward and Shanta Abaq Ward will be elevated to sub-counties next week,” Kithure said.
"Sankuri ward will be carved out of Balambala sub-county, and Shanta Abaq from Lagdera sub-county," stated CS Kithure. This development will increase the number of sub-counties in Garissa County from 10 to 12.

Abdi Sirat, a resident of Sankuri ward, welcomed the announcement, stating, "The decentralized unit will provide government functions and services that were initially difficult to access. Seeking services in Balambala Sub County, which is 130 km away from Sankuri, was difficult and costly, particularly at this time when rains rendered roads impassable."
He expressed that the elevation of Sankuri and Shanta Abaq was long-awaited, as residents had been constantly pleading with political leaders and senior government officials.
